About OpenMAM

It started with Planet Earth - not the globe we all live on, but the award-winning nature documentary series by the BBC.

Once upon a time in a land not so far away, there was a national broadcaster that was planning to embark on a multi-year project to create a very ambitious all-encompassing nature documentary series like the world had not seen before. The broadcaster was the BBC and "Planet Earth" was the title of the project. It added yet another dimension of complexity and herculean effort comapred to its pre-decessor "Blue Planet".

The latest HD camera technology was used to deliver the best possible picture quality. At the same time the production technology used to make the most of the painstakingly shot footage was to be used. So the BBC Natural History Unit (NHU) started looking for a solution that would address all their needs and maybe those of other BBC units as well.

Nothing they found available on the market satisfied their requirements. So along with the filming of the footage for "Planet Earth" a project was comissioned to create the solution required to successfully finish it. The year was 2001 and project BBAMS was born - Bristol Based Asset Management Solution. The town of Bristol, England, is the home of the BBC NHU.

The name of the project changed over the years, the BBC went through a planet phase and for a good while it was known as Project Mercury. By that time the sole developer of the project, the last man standing, had become Cinegy, on behalf of BBC Technology, that was
